Located just one hour north of downtown LA, Placerita Canyon is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This picturesque canyon offers beautiful forests and a historical gold rush site. It is an ideal destination for hikers of all skill levels. Here are some things to know before you go:

1. The History of the Canyon

In 1842, a cowboy named Francisco Lopez discovered gold under an onion root while digging for onions under an oak tree. This discovery sparked the first gold rush in California. Since then, Placerita Canyon has been a popular destination for mines and oil drilling. You can still see remnants of this history along the trail, including abandoned oil wells bubbling up with hot springs.

2. The Trail

The Canyon Trail is a well-maintained 2.5-mile hike that takes you to a beautiful waterfall. The trail is beginner-friendly and includes signs identifying the trees and plants you will encounter along the way. The elevation gain is around 700 feet, making it a moderate hike without too much difficulty.

3. The Waterfall

At around 1.8 miles, you’ll reach Walker Ranch, where the trail splits into two paths. Take the left route, the Waterfall Trail, to see the hike’s highlight. The amount of water flowing over the waterfall varies depending on rainfall. Still, even in the dry season, it’s a breathtaking sight.

4. The Oak of the Golden Dream

On your way back, be sure to stop by the Oak of the Golden Dream, located just under Placerita Canyon Road. This half-mile loop trail tells the story of the historic gold rush in the area. It provides a great photo opportunity with the magnificent oak tree.

5. Other Things to Do

If hiking isn’t your thing, Placerita Canyon still offers plenty of activities for families and nature enthusiasts. The park has a Nature Center with live animals, birdwatching opportunities, and picnic areas for a relaxing outdoor lunch.

6. How to Get There

From LA, take the 5 Fwy north and switch to the 14 Fwy. Take the Placerita Canyon Road exit, turn right, then drive 1.5 miles to reach the Placerita Canyon Park.
